15000 miles through some of the harshest conditions across Russia, Kazakhstan, Mongolia and even up the road of bones to Magadan my LaSalle Trim headlining stood the test. Easy clean. The Land Rover is now on the way to Canada! :D

Dear Andrew,

Well the big day has finally come for me to fit another roof to my Defender 90.  I got a mark 1 roof with no holes for sunroof or side windows, fantastic, no more leaks.

I had to get a new headlining, so I contacted LaSalle Interior Trim.

I spoke to the boss Andrew, he was most knowledgable and helpful, and he told me about the new sound proofing that he had just got in, to help eradicate some of the noise nuisance out of the 90.

With this new information I decided to order some along with my new roof lining and also enough to do the side panels as well.

Three to four weeks later I received very well wrapped headlining and sound proofing kit. I think to myself, Oh my god, I'll have to do it now!

With the help of my son we fitted the other roof to the 90 and proceeded to fit the sound proofing to the roof.

I needed to fit a piece of timber to my roof, as it has external ribs unlike the newer ones that are internal, the reason I fitted this was I wanted to fix centre rear lining to roof.

The rear lining was in two halves and it was easy enough to fit with two people, one to hold it and the other person to drill and secure it, moving from one side panel to the next.

Side roof panels complete, I then moved onto the front section.

I had pre cut the mount for my radio and speakers, so it was no problem for two people to fit it again ie; one to hold and one to drill.

Once it was all complete it really looked fantastic and I'm really pleased with the project, really worth the effort.

I can't get over how quiet my 90 is, now I can hear my radio, and it sounds more like a car than a van now that's how good it is.

It is now a pleasure to drive and it holds the heat better as well, infact I had to turn down the heater the other day, and that just didn't happen before.

Thanks to Andrew at LaSalle Trim, I've got a fab runabout with no drips on my head anymore.

You may think this has been a lot of work for myself but I can honestly say the difference has been unbelievable for my pleasure and comfort.

Thanks again

Yours sincerely

R. Hislop

My headlining arrived today and is now fitted, with only a little 'furtling'!  It looks fantastic and driving seems much quieter now, no need for shouting, and I can hear my music!

Many thanks for excellent service and products.  Garry C

Independent Product Review:   LaSalle Defender 90 Standard Headlining & Acousti-therm insulation

Headlining seems to be something of a weak point when it comes to Land Rover design, at least where the Defender and older Series models are concerned.  Construction methods can vary, but most of them utilise a simple compressed card backing and vinyl outer surface.  These sandwich a thin layer of foam and it’s this part that degrades over time.  When it does, a de-lamination of the materials in question inevitably results in the dreaded sag effect.

So, once you’ve got it, what do you do about it?

Well, there aren’t that many choices, as I found out recently when the headlining on my Defender 300tdi hardtop finally gave up the ghost.

The budget option is to carefully strip out and repair what you already have.  Depending on the severity of the problem, this is a temporary solution at best.  You could always fit a brand new replacement from Land Rover, but that’s going to cost a small fortune.  A more sensible idea is to try and source a secondhand lining.  The problem with this approach is that the good ones are few and far between and always fetch premium prices.  It’s also tricky to locate one that hasn’t been messed around with for speakers, alarms and the like.  And even if you do find the right example, how long before it succumbs to the same faults inherent within the basic design?

Fortunately, there is another option and I think it’s the most practical of the lot.

LaSalle headlinings are moulded from GRP, that’s glass reinforced plastic, a rigid composite material that is extremely tough, unaffected by water and a superb insulator.  And it won’t sag.  Ever.

The LaSalle options list is extensive, covering a variety of vehicle models and configurations, including Series, Defender and Range Rover.  My own requirements were for a full headlining to fit a Defender 90 hardtop, alpine window cut outs not required.  That’s not even on the menu with standard Land Rover spec.

Customers get a choice of design detailing such as speaker and radio housings, as well as additional alpine trim.  Standard finish is a lightly textured grey or tan, hardwearing, attractive and practical, and it’s also possible to specify a custom colour if you don’t mind a surcharge.

Fitting is straightforward enough as long as you have an extra pair of hands to help out.  All LaSalle headlinings come pre-drilled and attach to the roof gutters, cross member and central ribs.  Once you’re happy with the positioning, the final securing is done with the bag of plastic drive rivets supplied.  Also in the kit are the bolts you need for refitting the sun visors.  Take your time and you shouldn’t have any problems.

Another step well worth considering while the Landy roof is exposed concerns insulation.  Or, more accurately, the lack of it.  LaSalle now offer a product called Acousti-therm, a special open cell foam faced with reinforced aluminium foil that comes in sheet form 12mm thick.  The offside has a self-adhesive peel-away backing, so fitting to flat panels like the Defender’s roof and sides is a doddle.

The advantages are significant.  One of the reasons why the standard Land Rover headlining fails over time is the condensation which constantly forms on the underside of the roof.  Using Acousti-therm beneath the new headlining gets rid of that problem and also offers tremendous improvements in both sound and heat insulation.  If you’re going to do the job in the first place, you may as well do it properly for a few extra quid.  In my opinion, it’s money well spent.

And that just about sums up the whole experience.  Changing the headlining on a Defender isn’t a particularly difficult job, but it is time consuming and can be fiddly.  It therefore makes sense to do it just the once and do it right.  And the only way you can guarantee that happening is by going with LaSalle.

Just a quick note to say thanks for the headlining. It's all fitted now and its exactly what I was hoping for. It’s made a big improvement to the interior. I was also pleasantly surprised by how simple it was to fit - although its definitely a 2 person job!

  • 26th February 2011 - Portal Rover

Portalrover has fitted LaSalle interiors for some years now, and always been pleased with the results. Since the company has been bought out and moved to Scotland, the service has become personal, and we are delighted.   A new product supplied to me by LaSalle is an insulation / soundproof panel that self adheres to the roof and sides. This not only - but more importantly - stops condensation forming on the bare metal and keeps the noise down.   If you are fitting a new interior, do not do it without fitting this product first ! No more drips and stains, and warmer too.   Thank you LaSalle for coming up with this quick solution for a long term problem.   Hughie@portalrover.co.uk

Dear Sir,

First of all I must appologise for the delay in writing this letter to you.  I am extremely pleased with your products, Dashboard, Side Panels and Roof Panels for my Series III Land Rover.  The fit is extremely good and the only slight let down is the flexibility of the dash gauge mounting panel.

I have also found a better way of eliminating alltogether the heater box under the dashboard by using vacuum hose for the screen vents and screwing a 6" wide piece of aluminium from the bulkhead to the underside of the new dashboard.

Please find enclosed photographs of my finished Land Rover interior of which I am very proud.

Keep up the good work, and thank you for a good product, at what I consider to be a very reasonable price.

Yous sincerely

Mr Slater
